Having become a grandfather this year, I now know how my parents felt when their children became parents. The real reason my Dad became such a pain in the ass! Love my grandkids and I now worry about everything. Ever read that Dale Carnegie book " Stop worrying and start living", well easier said than done. Good book, should be on everyones reading list.
Just a few more days left in 2010, if you didn't get it done yet, forget it you won't get it done, so try getting an earlier start and quit procrastinating it doesn't make it go away. Make 2011, your year.
What really makes me crazy are those new year resolutions; diet, exercise, work harder, take more time off etc. Take some time to do a balance check with your life is my advice ( take it from a master worrier), try finding balance and live it. You won't need new year resolutions every year. Start today, this minute this second, you'll be happier.
So long 2010 it's been real!
Random thoughts of a consulting arborist on trees, people and places. Spending a little to much time driving around talking to myself.

Ok, it snowed!
Had a little blizzard, some minor tree damage. Have to go and check on the aftermath.

Peace on earth, goodwill to man
How joyous and precious life can be, a new member of my family arrived amid much chaos yesterday. A joy to her parents, grandparents, aunts uncles and cousins.
Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

It's was the night before Christmas, almost!
It just turned out this way, we only think we control our destinies, but we don't. Did a simple VTA this morning for a guy and his wife who have had a rough time the last couple of years. She lost both legs and all her finger tips ( diabetes?) and now a neighbor is harassing them over a tree. Normally I never comment on an assignment, but you have to feel some empathy for people and only can wish them the best. Driving away, I thought what a lucky man I am. So never think for one second your in control, your not. Be kind to everyone you meet and not so quick to judge.
My next stop was to see my daughter, not home. Somethings up, baby on way. So let's pray for a healthy and happy baby. Just in time for Christmas.
Holiday recess starts tomorrow, put this crazy year to bed and can't wait to see what the new year brings.

Yikes!
Ok, I thought I had sometime, but as usual nature has taken it's course. Next week will be busy; grandchild will arrive early for Christmas ( according to doc), need to pull all that Christmas stuff together and only have four days in this work year.
2010 was a year of wild weather, lots of tree damage. Most common problem was root plate failure on large conifers. This was caused primarily due to conflicts with paving. Cut roots decayed, try not to intrude on the critical root zone eventually you will pay the price.

Wow
Just remembered that next week is Christmas and that a new grand baby is on her way! Where has the time gone?
So to get into the holiday spirit, maybe a quick walk thru the mall, nah! Too crowded, traffic is crazy. That's a reminder to use extra caution when on the road, everyone is rushing around and lots of stupid stuff can happen. After a week of crews working on highways with extra work zone protection we all need to not forget that rushing around always leads to accidents. Take a breath and slow down, you'll get there.

Almost Christmas
It's the season,ho, ho, ho!
Some tree tips for that Christmas tree:
1. make a fresh cut on the end
2. Keep the stand full of water
3. Check the light cords, not frayed etc.
4. Use LED lights to be green
The trees can be recycled into mulch or used to fortify the dunes. These trees are grown as a crop , just like corn. So using a real tree is a good way to support a farm family. If you opt for a live tree, prep the planting hole before the ground freezes, mulch the soil with salt hay to keep it from freezing and plant the tree as soon as possible and mulch the new tree with a couple of inches of wood chips. Be sure to water thoroughly at planting.

Welcome to my blog
Just back from the ASCA 2010 Conference on Amelia Island Plantation and man was it cold.Florida I thought I was in Alaska. Lots of stuff to share, new tech, and met old and made new friends. ASCA
What's going on?
Snow maybe, but who cares (as long as it stays in the Midwest), 70's &80's down in Florida go figure. Anyway the trees are ready for the cold weather, if you didn't give your evergreens a good drink we do expect some rain (turning to snow?) tomorrow. Trees as most of are plants go dormant, but the roots will keep growing till the soil freezes and transpiration will go on any time the sun is out on the evergreens. Strong winds, or too close to the sea, then try an anti-desiccant to slow that down. Be sure to tie up your Arborvitae (breakage from snow) and for those who love figs, I hope your fig tree is wrapped good.

Keep the deicing salts away from your trees or next spring they may look like this one!

A day on Shutter Island
Spend the day on that summer hotspot Shelter Island watching the crew work, got some angry looks from the natives. Then they all came back to ask for wood, seems free wood makes people friendly fast. Cold 11 deg., slowly warmed to a sultry 25 by mid afternoon. We got to the Vine St. Cafe, tonights special is whole bass, price fixe starts at 5 and ends at 6pm so arrive early. Some how I don't think you'll have a problem. Next door they have some goats.Go figure most of the guys have never seen a goat, so after some play we finally went back to work. I did check the menu and goat isn't on it. I'm outta here, back to where people live for real.
Mmmmm, hot goat sandwiches!!!
